MMORPG Info Logo Quick Reference to RIFT Races

As RIFT is still in beta, this information is subject to change. The details below are up-to-date as of the Feb 4th patch notes for Beta 6.

There are six races in the world of Telara, three per faction. The Mathosians and the Eth are the human races.

Each race has three skills:

  • a special ability which may be passive (Dwarves) but generally is active with a 5 minute cooldown
  • a trait which enhances statistics
  • and a racial resistance

A guildmate pointed me to these photographs of an awesome bit of real-life house renovation.

I think this is awesome! Honestly, I’m dismayed by the (few) responses that they’ve had accusing them of wasting time and ruining the resale value of the house. I think the world is a better place because people are happy to do fun and interesting projects like this. I wish I had an ounce of the home repair talent and inspiration that went into this project.

Here’s our finished HORDE bathroom remodel!!

My wife and I have been playing World of Warcraft for nearly five years now, and we decided to remodel our bathroom following something of a HORDE motif. I’m not exactly sure where I should have posted this, so I decided to put it here. Both my wife and I hope you enjoy the fruits of our labor (and yes, we did ALL the work–nothing was contracted).

For groups and guilds looking to play RIFT, a key question is now taking precedence: which side?

You must choose your faction at character creation and there is no way to change faction once you have chosen. You can not join a group nor a guild with members of the opposite faction. There was no cross-faction communication possible in the beta but it’s not clear whether that limitation will remain. Also, I’m not sure whether we will be able to have characters of both factions on the same server or we will have to choose a faction per server.

The Factions

The people of Telara are now convinced that the end of the world is at hand. In these desperate final days, two major factions have arisen to battle the coming apocalypse: the Guardians and the Defiant. Though each faction wants to save the world, their beliefs and methods differ, and they war upon each other as often as they do other enemies of Telara.

The Callings (archetypes) are the same per faction but there are faction and race-specific souls. There’s mention of some of the starting souls being limited by faction.

The factions meet in instanced areas referred to as Warfronts, similar to the battlegrounds in World of Warcraft. The Warfronts have a specific objective, for example the possession of an item over time or capture the flag. Each faction gains points as they accomplish specific goals.

The RIFT forums includes a poll for the registered members: The Faction Divide, Round Two!. At time of writing, 32% have selected Guardians, 47% have selected Defiants and 20% remain undecided.

Generally speaking, the Guardians represent order while the Defiant represent chaos. [More…]

RIFT is a fantasy MMORPG from Trion Worlds based in the world of Telara, which is recovering from the Shade War, including the damage done by a huge magical explosion.

The after-effects of this explosion include mysterious rifts – doorways from other planes – which allow dangerous beings to enter the world. The Telarans are struggling against these attacks but unfortunately the resistance is split into two factions, the Guardian and the Defiant, with different beliefs and conflicting methods for protecting Telara.

Trion Worlds has announced that RIFT is launching on the 1st of March 2011 – only a few months away! Blogs and fansites are full of excitement and I’ve been reading the raves and reviews from the beta test after the NDA was dropped in December. The initial response seems good.

As a player, you are revived as a member of the Ascended. The Ascended are Telarans who have been resurrected to combat the rifts. There are four callings (otherwise known as archetypes): Warrior, Cleric, Mage and Rogue. You must choose your calling, your faction and your race at character creation.

As one would expect, these callings are gateways into more specialized classes (six specialized classes per calling have been announced) which you access through attuning souls. You end up with three souls that you can attune to at any one time as a blend, so you are augmenting or even replacing your resurrected soul with other souls of the same calling when you attune a soul.

As is clear from the updates to the site, I have not been playing Everquest 2 for some time now. I found it hard to explain – even to myself – why I didn’t feel the thrall of one of my fantasy worlds any longer. When I saw that Stargrace of MMOquests had posted a goodbye to the game, I asked her to share her thoughts as to what went wrong. Having read her reasonings, I was impressed: she puts into words what I had not been able to express. She’s kindly agreed to write a guest post for MMORPG-Info on the subject which I’m pleased to be able to share with you.


I can’t pinpoint the exact moment when I started to withdraw from EQ2, but I know it happened sometime between Ruins of Kunark and Sentinel’s Fate. I had been raiding as my illusionist in Echoes of Faydwer back in 2006/2007 and then quickly switched to my troubador in RoK. That was probably the first sign of things to come and it really had nothing to do with the game so much as my play style. The fact that I had 10 level 90s a few months into Sentinel’s Fate was another indication. I wasn’t actually concentrating on a character any more, my attention kept drifting. I never pin pointed exactly WHAT was causing this disinterest, I only knew that it was there … lurking in the background of my play sessions. [More…]
