Minecraft Charcoal in Minecraft

As of Minecraft beta version 1.2, mined coal is no longer the only means of lighting furnaces and creating torches.

You can now create charcoal in a furnace, which acts exactly like coal and uses the same graphic (but does not stack with coal).

To create charcoal without coal, you need a furnace, wood (harvested directly from a tree) and at least one wooden plank. Burn the wood using the wooden plank as fuel and you will gain one charcoal per wood. One wooden plank fuels the creation of six charcoal. [More...]

LotRO Icon The Balrog is in the Details

One of the major issues of games that are based on a ‘licence’ is that a lot of fans of the original work will go into the game with quite high expectations. They will obsess over the detail, often over issues within the game that the vast majority of the audience will feel are trivial concerns.

In Lord of the Rings Online, a friend and I spent a good half hour comparing the shape of the Rushock Bog to Tolkien’s maps to work out why it looks wrong. (It’s not wide enough.) Slight geographical errors aside, most often Lord of the Rings Online feels very much like the source material. All the art matches that of John Howe and Alan Lee, whose art has pretty much dominated every incarnation of the licence, from the book covers to the films. It’s not always perfect in tone, in particular fighting level 35 flies around the Ford of Bruinen feels a lot more like EverQuest that Tolkien, but in the main the game succeeds in evoking Middle Earth. Nevertheless, to the fanatic, the broad sweep of art and feel are not enough, it is the trivial details that are important.

Take for example, Glorfindel. Now a lot of people at this point will be asking: Who is Glorfindel? He is one of the characters who was cut from the film, with his role mainly being given to Arwen. That said, he doesn’t really do much in the book anyway, other than rescuing Frodo from some Nazgul. His role is bigger in the appendices. There, he confronts the Witch King and basically chases him away. It is at this point that he makes the prophecy that the Witch King will not fall by the ‘Hand of Man’. This is one of those pivotal facts about the story that people remember, even if they don’t remember it was Glorfindel who said it. [More...]

MMORPG Info Logo Pocket Legends (Mobile MMORPG)

Quality RPG gaming on the iPad is a little thin on the ground (although with the Unreal engine coming to Apple devices, the future looks much more promising) but there are a few promising candidates on the iTunes store if you’re prepared to do a little hunting.

One example is Pocket Legends – the largest MMORPG currently available for mobile platforms and has clients for iPhone, iPod, iPad and Android devices. It’s free to play, although it is possible to purchase platinum to buy premium content such as extra dungeon campaigns, weapons and vanity items. It’s not essential to pay to play though – it’s possible to enjoy the game without spending anything. [More...]

LotRO Icon Outlevelled

Around ten years ago, myself and a bunch of my mates participated in an experiment. As our lives had developed, we had become increasingly split up throughout the UK, to the point that keeping in contact, never a strong point of the adult male, had become increasingly infrequent. To try to combat this, we all started an online game together, with the intention of regularly grouping up once a week, so we could socialise over the internet.

The game we chose was called Everquest, which had just had its first expansion pack Ruins of Kunark and was available for a pretty reasonable price. Being pen and paper role-players, we joined the unofficial RP server, Tarew Marr. We all took out our subscriptions, rolled our first characters, and logged in to discover that just to meet up in game, one of us would have to run from Steamfont to Qeynos… which was a very long and dangerous way indeed. This was by no means the only hurdle: eventually differing play times, personal ambitions and sheer ability to cope with the horrifically uncompromising game play of EQ meant the experiment met limited success. On the other hand, most of us ended up in the same EQ guild, which still survives today, ten years and probably even more online games, later. [More...]

MMORPG Info Logo Nintendo 3DS

Nintendo have announced the Nintendo 3DS, a new handhold gaming device which promises 3D without the glasses. The Nintendo 3DS has a 3D screen with depth slider so you can control the amount of 3D you receive, along with a circle pad and touch screen.

Nintendo 3DS brings a dimensional shift to the world of entertainment on March 25 – Nintendo – News

Nintendo 3DS includes two screens. The bottom Touch Screen makes use of a telescoping stylus that is stored in the unit itself. The top screen displays 3D visuals to the naked eye. Looking at the screen is like peering through a window into a world where characters and objects have true depth. The system also has a 3D depth slider that lets players select the level of 3D they enjoy the most. The 3D effect can be increased up to the highest level, scaled back to a more moderate setting or even turned off completely, depending on the preference of the user.
